Scholastica’s CEO and Co-Founder Brian Cody, CTO and Co-Founder Cory Schires, and Head of Marketing Danielle Padula discussed their takes on the key themes of the upcoming Society for Scholarly Publishing Conference during a virtual water cooler chat. Click here to watch.

Now that so many people are working semi or entirely remotely, do you miss having impromptu discussions with colleagues (a.k.a. water cooler conversations) about the latest scholarly publishing news? At Scholastica, we sure do!

So, we decided to recreate the experience by holding a virtual water-cooler chat with some of our team and posting it to Scholastica’s YouTube channel so others can tune in and share their thoughts via the comments.

Team Scholastica has been excitedly preparing for the upcoming Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) Conference happening May 29th through the 31st in beautiful Boston, Massachusetts (we’re exhibiting at booth # 104!). So, we thought, what better topic to start with than that? Specifically, we were interested in discussing timely session topics, how Scholastica is currently approaching those areas, and questions we’re eager to see addressed.

You can watch the virtual Scholastica water-cooler chat here.

Quick conversation highlights

During the water-cooler chat, Scholastica’s CEO and Co-Founder Brian Cody, CTO and Co-Founder Cory Schires, and Head of Marketing Danielle Padula shared their take on this year’s SSP Conference theme, “Inflection Point: Setting the Course for the Future of Scholarly Communication,” and what looks to be the hottest topic of the meeting — Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impacts on academic publishing. Isn’t AI the theme of 2024 in general?

To give a flavor of what AI areas the SSP Conference will cover, scheduled sessions include:

  • “The Other AI: The Role of Actual Intelligence In the Future of Scholarly Publishing”
  • “Leveraging AI Tools in Small Organizations: Strategies for Success”
  • “Transforming Research Integrity: The Role of Responsible AI Adoption”
  • “AI-Enhanced Peer Review: Adapting to New Challenges in Academia”

As a software company, we Scholasticans tend to gravitate toward the technical. So, it’s no surprise that our conversation quickly became AI-centric. Cory, Brian, and Danielle discussed AI policy development and implementation at Scholastica and the aspects of AI they hope for SSP sessions to dig into.

The Scholastica team had so much fun holding this inaugural virtual water-cooler conversation, and we look forward to hearing your take on the discussion topics. We invite you to share your thoughts in the YouTube video comments section (please also give the video a thumbs up if you want to see more discussion like it). You can also find Scholastica on X (formerly Twitter) and LinkedIn.

Additionally, if you’re attending this year’s SSP Conference in person, we encourage you to stop by Scholastica’s exhibit to say hello! You can find us at booth # 104 (and there’s a good chance you’ll bump into Brian at AI-focused sessions)!
