Are you wondering which promotion outlets are working for other publications, how they’ve honed their promotion strategies, and how you can apply those proven methods to your journal?
In “Social Media & Website Optimization for Journals,” a free webinar co-hosted by Scholastica and the International Society of Managing and Technical Editors (ISMTE), we asked two journal editors to share how they’ve used social media and innovative approaches to journal website design to successfully raise awareness of their publications. During the presentation both editors shared real examples of how they went about building a journal social media strategy and optimizing their website, how they’re continuing to improve, and some dos and don’ts they’ve learned along the way.

Whether your just getting started with journal promotion or you’ve been at it for a while now, “Social Media & Website Optimization for Journals” is full of useful tips you can apply to your publication.
Kicking off the webinar presentation, Katie spoke on the benefits of using social media for journal promotion and shared 10 steps to get started with social media at your journal. She also overviewed some more advanced social media strategies, including how to:
- Improve the branding of your social media profiles
- Cross-promote social media profiles and use hashtags to get more eyes on your posts
- Develop and manage a social media posting schedule
- Measure the success of your social media efforts
Following Katie, Johan spoke on the importance of optimizing your journal website design to help scholars more easily find articles relevant to them and make your website one they want to frequent. Johan shared many screenshots and examples from Glossa’s journal website that you can apply to your publication. Among advice he shared was how to:
- Improve readers’ experience navigating your website
- Make it easier for readers to find answers to common questions
- Give readers new and improved ways to find and view your journal’s content
- Use your homepage and social media to highlight new and past articles and issues
During the webinar Scholastica and ISMTE also shared links to additional journal promotion resources, including ISMTE’s guide to creating a journal podcast and Scholastica’s Scholarly Journal Promotion 101 Handbooks Series.
