In this blog post, the editors at the Northwestern University Law Review Online share their new project, Donald Trump’s SCOTUS Picks, which they launched in October 2016. The following is a guest blog post contributed by the editorial team about their website and it’s role in legal scholarship.
Much has been said about President-Elect Donald Trump’s judicial philosophy and his potential Supreme Court nominees. However, relatively little attention has been paid to the legal opinions written by Trump’s potential nominees.
We at the Northwestern University Law Review Online set out to fill this gap with our website Donald Trump’s SCOTUS Picks.
We surveyed the opinions written by each potential Trump nominee and created a website designed to provide access to the nominees’ most interesting opinions in a digestible format. The website provides a quick reference to the judges’ rulings on topics that are important to today’s voters and legal commentators, including:
- first amendment issues
- second amendment issues
- criminal appeals
- state tort reform claims
- discrimination actions, and others.
We’ve included opinions written by Judge Margaret Ryan on the Court of Appeals for the Armed Services as well as substantive legislative work done by Senator Mike Lee. Our hope is that readers will use the website to learn about the judicial values that are shared by all of Trump’s potential nominees, as well as the issues on which the nominees’ opinions diverge.
